Why to adopt and not buy a dog

THERE ARE ALSO PUPPIES IN ANIMAL SHELTERS

Many people think that buying a puppy is a simple way to start over. You can train and socialize the pup right from the start to get exactly stable dog you’ve always wanted. In fact, many believe that animal shelters are full of dogs with problematic behavior and unpredictable temperaments. But that is anything but correct. Many dogs are in shelters, from unwanted puppies to older, loving dogs whose owners can no longer care for them. And of course there are also dogs with demanding needs, but one thing is certain: animal shelters have a one ready for every dog lover who is really looking for a puppy.

THE PERFECT DOG

There is a wide range of dogs to choose from at shelters, which means that any prospective new owner can find the perfect dog, based on their lifestyle and experience with dogs. Animal shelters conduct a thorough evaluation of all dogs in their care. Temperament, sociability, trainability and activity level are assessed. Any problematic behavior is also identified. Animal shelters also evaluate the potential adoptive family to determine which dog would be the best fit for them. And animal shelters are completely honest if it turns out that a particular dog might not be a good fit for a potential new family.

SAVE A LIFE

By adopting a dog from an animal shelter, you are helping another dog, because if a dog is adopted, another dog in need can take his place, animal shelters and foster homes only have limited space. Animal shelters are often prisons for the animals for years. Even if they are well taken care of. Dogs are pack animals and need  a family and a real home. Saving life here means saving a dog’s life, giving a dog a chance to be happy.

TAKE A STAND AGAINST BACKYARD BREEDERS

While there are reputable breeders who take care of the dogs health and raise happy, healthy puppies, there are also those unscrupulous breeders whose machinations are difficult to predict. The appropriate health tests are not carried out and even in some cases sick puppies are being sold. They only care about the profit margin. In Germany only about 10% of the dogs and cats are adopted, unfortunately the rest are all bought from breeders – it shouldn’t be like this. Why breed more dogs when there are a lot of dogs that are in need and are looking for a home?

AN ADOPTED DOG WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL

The feeling of having given a rescue animal a home is priceless and the joy is far greater than receiving a designer puppy as a present. The gratitude of a rescue dog to the people who rescued him and welcomed him into their homes remains for ever. Anyone who has adopted a dog will tell you that the bond with an adopted dog is very strong and special.
